The New Youth Groups

By: Janne Waagbø

This year, two new youth groups have been started and are up and running, one in Kingston/ St. Andrew and the other in Portmore, St. Catherine. These are groups for youth between 17 and 30 years, united by the common interest of helping vulnerable people in their communities and in their country. Helping others is more fun when you do it together with friends, and the help often turns out to be more efficient and powerful.

The Red Cross gives the youth a chance to develop their skills through different kinds of training. Youth from both groups are now involved in Jamaica Red Cross’ new Anti-Violence Programme, “Peaceful Solutions”, and are the ones who will carry the programme on into youth institutions in their communities.

Youth are full of motivation and energy, and are a resource for Red Cross all over the world. There is a hope that the other branches in Jamaica will follow the example from Portmore and Kingston/ St. Andrew, and get their youth together to form groups of youth ready to give a helping hand.
